Bonn and the Region Summer vacation offers for children and families

Bonn · Summer is here and there are many activities offered for children and families. It might even be a good way for kids to improve their German skills while having fun. Here’s a look at what’s being offered this summer.

LVR State Museum

Children and their parents take a fun trip back in time and learn about life during the era of knights and castles. The medieval exhibition in the LVR State Museum, which is open throughout the summer holidays, offers 35 stations where children can experience first hand what life was like in those days. They have the opportunity to ride in a tournament, hold a sword, compose medieval music or learn exciting things from medieval experts.

Prices: Adults pay 8 euros, children and teenagers up to 18 years get in free.

Tip: Discovery time - Every Wednesday and Sunday from July 14 to August 25 there are guided tours and workshops on various topics. Ages: six to twelve years, participation fee: 5 euros.

Acting workshops

The Junge Theater Bonn offers intensive workshops for children and young people between the ages of ten and 18. For three weeks the participants work and rehearse daily from 10 am to 4 pm on their project, which culminates in a 30 to 45-minute premiere in the Junge Theater Bonn or in the performance area of the Thalia book store in Bonn city center. Previous acting experience is not required.

Exciting adventures in the forest

In this program, children are offered real adventures in nature and they get to explore the forest as a band of robbers. This experience is organized by the Querwaldein Association, from July 29 to August 2, 9 am to 3 pm. Children between the ages of six and twelve get to know nature in a playful way. They learn to make a fire, to carve and to complete fascinating tasks in their group.

Playmobil History

The Hamburg artist Oliver Schaffer stages his impressive show landscapes from his Playmobil collection at the Deutsches Museum Bonn under the theme Science and Technology. The exhibition can be seen there until August 25 and is accompanied by several guided tours and activities for the whole family.

The Playmobil history search sends children from the age of four on a journey of discovery throughout the museum together with their parents. The search game is available free of charge at the museum box office. The one-hour children's tour "Punkt, Punkt, Strich: Warum Playmobil-Figuren keine Nasen haben" is designed for children between the ages of four and ten and takes place on Saturdays at 2 pm and on Sundays and public holidays at 11 am. Participation costs three euros.

Haus der Geschichte (History Museum)

How did our parents and grandparents live in former times, what toys did they play with and how did they dress? In the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn, children can explore these secrets in the form of puzzles and exercises. This program is aimed at children between the ages of nine and twelve and takes place on July 17 (registration deadline: Monday, July 15) and August 22 (registration deadline: Monday, August 20). The program starts at 9:30 am and ends at 3 pm.

Price: 12 euros includes snack and lunch at the museum café, payable on site.

Bonn Street Soccer Tour 2019

The Bonn Street Soccer Tour, organized by the Bonn City Sports Association, is aimed at children and young people aged nine to fourteen and takes place at three locations in Bonn. It runs from July 16 to August 15.

From July 16 to August 13, Tuesdays from 3 pm to 6 pm, the program will take place at the sports field, Kopenhagener Str. in Graurheindorf. The Rigal'sche Wiese in Bad Godesberg is the second location, where children and young people can play soccer from July 18 to August 15, Thursdays from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. In the area between the Emmaus Church and the youth center at Fahrenheitstraße 51, the children and young people meet on Fridays from July 19 to August 2 from 3 pm to 6 pm. The soccer does not take place in case of thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Outdoor teepee camp at the foot of the Venusberg

This is a holiday camp offered by ZUB e.V. Bonn (Future-Environment Education). For one week, from July 29 to August 2, the forest at the foot of Venusberg mountain will become a large camp with teepees, which are historically associated with Native Americans ( for children aged six to twelve). At camp, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, they learn to read different animal tracks and to distinguish poisonous plants from edible plants and how one builds a teepee from branches.

Computer workshops for children and young people

For children and young people who are interested in programming from an early age, those between the ages of ten and sixteen can learn how to program using small robots, so-called "ozobots" and the programming language "scratch". The course takes place from August 12 to 15, each day from from 10 am to 1 pm.

Cost: 42 euros, with Bonn ID 33 euros, registration until July 31

The workshop, called "barrierefrei kommunizieren!” (obstacle-free communication) offers a keyboard course from August 5th to 9th. There, children and young people between the ages of ten and sixteen learn touch typing on the keyboard by memory. The program takes place from 10 am to 1 pm on the days offered.

Cost: 52 euros, with Bonn identity card 31 euros, registration until July 31

The "Medienworkshop für junge Geflüchtete" ("Media workshop for refugee youth" ) is aimed at children and young people from ten to eighteen years of age and will take place from July 15 to 19. The program is from Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 4 pm and on Friday from 10 am to 2 pm. All questions about computers and the internet will be answered there, as well as how to program robots and how to work with Word and PowerPoint.

Price: The workshop is free of charge.

Holiday trip to the island of Ameland

There are still places available for the holiday trip to the island of Ameland off the north coast of the Netherlands. For children aged between 13 and 16 years, the Fachkreis des Hotti e.V. in cooperation with the city of Sankt Augustin and Kleiner Muck e.V. organize a program with lots of variety for children and young people, August 9 - 23. The island Ameland belongs to the West Frisian islands, part of the Netherlands. The island is popular because of its forests, dunes, the Wadden Sea and last but not least because of the 25 km long white North Sea beach. This program is also available for younger children and teenagers, aged between eight and twelve. There are still places available.

Cost: For eight- to twelve-year-olds 499 euros, OGS pupils from Sankt Augustin pay 449 euros, for children from 13 to 16 years the cost is 525 euros.

Bonnatours

Bonnatours offers a different program for children every week during the summer vacation period. From life in the Stone Ages to the life of Native American Indians and a one-week nature research camp in the Eifel region, children from the age of five are offered a program rich in variety.

Cost: Holiday program without overnight stay (five days): Main program: 165 euros (including material costs and picnic food), early morning supervision: 30 euros per week, lunch supervision: 60 euros per week (including lunch). Nature research camp/full day program Eifel with overnight stay: 395 euros (including overnight stay, food and travel)
