Bonnorange gives tips on how to stop smells Stinking rubbish causes chemical alarm in Plittersdorf

Bonn · The fire brigade sent a special vehicle to test for chemicals in Plittersdorf yesterday after several residents complained of a terrible smell.

Temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and full sun: summer has finally come to Bonn in the last few days. And it is not only people who are suffering in the heat; rubbish in the city’s bins is too. The Bonn fire brigade control room received several calls on Sunday evening and Monday morning from residents complaining about a terrible smell. City spokesperson, Marc Hoffmann, said it was coming from Wurzerstraße, in the Plittersdorf area, heading towards Rüngsdorf and that the fire brigade had sent a special vehicle equipped to test for radioactive, chemical and biological contamination. Officers discovered the smell was coming from rubbish bins and Hoffmann said they informed the cleaning service Bonnorange.

A spokeswoman for Bonnorange, Birgit Gußmann, had no further information on Monday afternoon. However, she said a complaint about unpleasant smells had also been received by Bonnorange. “A resident complained to us about stinking rubbish. It was fruit lying in the heat next to a bin.”

The cleaning service has published tips on how to handle rubbish in summer to stop unpleasant smells. General rubbish bins, organic waste collection (green) bins and yellow bins should be kept in the shade where possible. Bin lids should be kept closed and food leftovers wrapped in bags or newspaper where possible before they are put in the bin. Smells can also linger after the green bins are emptied. “It can happen that fruit juices drip onto the streets after green bins are emptied. That smells, of course.”

There has so far not been any adjustment of the schedule to empty bins because of the heat. Besides being a huge logistical undertaking, this is also not Bonnorange’s policy. “We rely on giving residents tips on how to keep their rubbish bins clean or on how they can have them professionally cleaned,” said Gußmann.
