Kölsch music comes to Bonn Sounds of carnival at the Rheinaue

Bonn · Why wait for the weather to turn cold to celebrate carnival? Organizers of “Jeck im Sunnesching” want people to enjoy the sounds of carnival in summer. A few tickets are left for those who hurry.

A glance at the calendar tells us that it’s not long until 11.11. For those not in the know, the 11th of November is a big day in the Rhineland, the start of carnival. Enthusiasts who are already longing for the so-called “fifth season” to begin will have a chance to dress up in big red clown noses, cowboy hats and cat ears on the 2nd of September. From 9 am, the Rheinaue will be filled with the sounds of Kölsch (a word that refers not only to the local beer but the Cologne dialect as well). “Jeck im Sunnesching” (Kölsch for - carnivalists in the sunshine) kicks off on the September Saturday morning with well-known bands such as Brings, Kasallla, Cat Ballou and others.

Organizers are hoping it all happens under sunny skies. Otherwise it would be a waste of the motto “fiere ohne ze friere” (celebrate without freezing). The idea originated with Alexander Manek of “Haus Unkelbach” who felt that one shouldn’t only celebrate Kölsch musical hits in the cold carnival weeks. Beginning in 2015, a couple of successful summer events took place in Cologne - with the consequence of an expansion to Bonn.

But it was a little complicated this year because of the construction for the World Climate Conference at the Rheinaue. Initial plans for the carnival event to be held at the “Blumenwiese” had to be changed. A spokesperson for Dionysos events said this was “not a problem at all.” The program would stay exactly as planned.

Besides the music, there will be a Street Food festival with a wide variety of culinary dishes ranging from burgers to Lebanese food - sure to attract many visitors. Organizers say the event is just about sold out but those who hurry can still get a ticket for 15.90 euros. Tickets can be purchased at GA-sales offices listed here: http://www.ga.de/verlag/abo/zweigstellen/ or online at www.gaffel.de as well as in Deiters carnival stores.
