Bonn Greeters See Bonn through the eyes of a local

Bonn · Bonn Greeters are celebrating their first birthday. The volunteers act as free city guides and offer tours in 14 different languages.

The small group with Willi Baukhage makes itself comfortable at a table in the corner. “Now we’ll have a break and warm up,” he suggests. He and the Dinauer family from Kempten in Allgäu have been out and about in Bonn for an hour. Baukhage is a so-called Bonn Greeter. They offer free tours of the city. Their slogan: “Come as a guest, leave as a friend.”

“Each of our city tours is different,” says Baukhage. “Because each of us shows our personal Bonn.” The Dinauer family is visiting their daughter Monika, who has been studying in Bonn since April. Her father is in the city for the fourth time, it is the third visit for the others. “Before now, we didn’t have much time during our visits, that’s why we wanted to have a city tour this time,” explains Monika’s sister Stefanie. She came across Bonn Greeters on the city’s website. When booking, she could state any special interests the group had. “That’s really practical for our family, because our interests are very varied,” she says and laughs. Her favourite subject at school was history, so she is also interested in dates. Her brother Konrad is a master bricklayer, so his interest is more in the city’s buildings. “The small group is more personal and I can answer all questions individually,” says Baukhage.

The Dinauer family has lots of questions. They are attentive guests. On leaving the café in Bonngasse, mother Isolde notices the glass tiles on the street. “Those are famous Bonn personalities,” explains Baukhage. A bit further on in front of the Town Hall, she wonders about the plaques in the ground of the forecourt. “Those are spines of books,” realises Monika. “By authors, who have, for example, studied here at the university,” adds Baukhage. His guests are delighted by the style of the tour. “We like doing city tours,” says Isolde. “We have already taken part in lots and it’s nice that someone has so much time for us, that we understand every word and that really every question is answered.”

There are Greeters all over the world. The idea comes from New York and started around 30 years ago. Matthias Ohm, the head of Bonn Greeters, brought the idea to the federal city and the association has now existed for a year. Around 40 Bonners are now involved on a voluntary basis and city tours can be offered in 14 different languages. “Last year we led around 70 tours with guests from Argentina, Canada, Russia and also Greece and Spain,” Baukhage sums up.

After three hours, a visit to the Poppelsdorf Castle, the Alter Zoll, the Beethoven house and the market place, the tour ends in the Christmas market. “This is why we are here,” says father Helmut happily. The Dinauers are thrilled by the lovingly decorated stalls on the Münsterplatz. Baukhage gives some more tips – where to find the best Bratwurst and mulled wine – and then leaves his guests.
