What is important for Bonn residents? A new survey carried out by social and marketing researchers, Infas and nhi² answers exactly that question. A whopping 74 percent of people surveyed said security was most important to them. The level of contentment in this category sunk lightly from 38 to 36 percent. Robert Follmer, director of the Infas study said, “Sensibility to crime is more in focus this year than in previous years.” This could be due to the ongoing problem with home burglaries and also the deadly attack on Niklas P. in Bad Godesberg, which was an emotionally charged topic for many.

Another theme that was important for the 803 Bonners surveyed was public transportation with also 74 percent rating this highly. Administration and public services was viewed by 61 percent as important and the level of contentment in this area dropped the most sharply from 40 percent in 2013 to 21 percent in 2016.

When it comes to shopping and commerce, 57 percent were happy with what Bonn has to offer. 54 percent were happy with the gastronomy scene and 56 percent were content with cultural offers. Bonn residents were less content with what’s on offer for families and children, with only 34 percent approving. Even fewer were happy with sports offers, this percentage went down from 32 percent in 2013 to 28 percent in 2016.

As for the financial situation in Bonn, residents surveyed here were less optimistic than those questioned nationwide. In Bonn, only 29 percent perceived the financial situation as “good” or “very good” while this figure was 50 percent nationwide. Even though the perception was not so positive, Bonn continues to have the highest gross domestic product (GDP) in North Rhine Westphalia, with a growing population and number of jobs, as well as large proportion of highly qualified workers.

What does Bonn actually represent? 33 percent see it as a cultural city, 32 percent as a romantic city on the Rhine and 29 percent as a location for sciences. Around 25 percent view Bonn as the birthplace of Beethoven, and only 11 percent named it as a United Nations city. Director of the study, Follmer said the cultural offers and proximity to the Rhine were very present in people’s minds but not the international flair of the city.
