Three persons rescued from Rhine Rowboat collides with freighter in Cologne

Cologne · Three people were rescued when their small boat collided with a tanker on the Rhine in Cologne. One was seriously injured and all three were taken to the hospital.

A rowboat with three people on board collided with a tanker and capsized on Tuesday morning in the Rhine near the Mülheimer bridge in Cologne. The information was released by the Cologne Fire Department.

The fire department responded with rescue boats, vehicles and a helicopter to the crash site. Some were rescued from the Rhine with the help of a lifeboat. Because of the high water level at the Rhine, the fire department said it was difficult to bring the people ashore. One area normally used as a handover point was not passable due to the high waters.

Members of the Mülheim water sports club offered their help and opened their clubhouse, where the injured were taken. From there, emergency medical workers cared for those who were rescued. Of the three persons rescued, one was seriously injured and two were only slightly injured. All three were taken to the hospital.

It is still unclear as to what caused the accident. According to the Duisburg coast guard, the investigation continues. One thing they will look at is whether the rowboat capsized because of the collision or whether a large wave was responsible.
