Bonn · It is a landmark on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn and had to be closed this year by the old tenant for health reasons. Now the beer garden of the Rheinpavillon is open again with a new tenant.
A new era is dawning for a landmark on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn. The heritage protected Rheinpavillon (at the Rheinnixe ferry jetty near the Collegium Albertinium) will now be managed by the well-known Bonn restaurateur Saeed Bahadori. The ground floor pavilion was built as early as 1947 for the Heppenheimer family, followed in 1953 by the distinctive upper level in the shape of a Zeppelin cockpit. In April 1996, Arno Heppenheimer took over the business from his father. The Rheinpavillon closed temporarily at Easter this year.
The new tenant, Saeed Bahadori, came to Bonn in 1983 to study medicine before discovering his love for gastronomy. He has been running Extra Dry on the Poppelsdorfer Meile since 1991. “We are aware that the Rheinpavillon is something unique in Bonn and for this reason its name will stay” explains Bahadori. The upper level is currently being renovated and newly designed (bar, flooring, furniture). In September, a 70s-style lounge with seating for 120 is due to open.
Beer garden already open
The beer garden, with seating for around 200, is already open. An application for a beach bar directly on the water will “be made this year and we will likely open the Beach Bar in 2020 - but probably without sand,” Bahadori said. The beer garden offers four Flammkuchen (six Euros each), three club sandwiches (4.90 Euros each) and hot dogs. Master confectioner Marie Eisenbarth will soon be baking three types of cake daily in her small “kingdom” in the upper level of the Rheinpavillon, including the Rheinpavillon torte, the recipe for which is secret.
There is Sion Kölsch and Brau Bengel Pils on tap (0.3l at 3.30 Euros each) as well as Hofbräu Weizen beers (0.5l at 4.90 Euro). In addition there are eleven wines by the glass (0.2l) from 5.50 Euro and homemade soft drinks such as iced tea, lemonades and smoothies (3.20 Euro each). The coffee specialities are prepared in an Italian portafilter machine by Fiamma. Bahadori is planning special offers for his student customers.
