The “Rheinbacher” that’s not from Rheinbach "Rheinbacher Premium Pilsner" at Aldi UK
Rheinbach · A young woman from Rheinbach was taken aback when her eyes became fixed on a "Rheinbacher Premium Pilsner" in a British supermarket. Is Aldi UK beer brewed in Rheinbach? GA reporter Mario Quadt went in search of an answer to the question.
Little gifts that people bring back from vacations are a bit like this: They always come with good intentions but are not always nice to look at. In one instance, however, it was a different situation. GA reader Walter Fechtig from Rheinbach recently received a souvenir from his daughter. The Rheinbach resident was astonished to hold in his hands a six-pack of "Rheinbacher Premium Pilsner", which his daughter had discovered and purchased in a British Aldi supermarket.
Fechtig wondered if the Rheinbach brewery on Wilhelmsplatz was already exporting to the UK. “Not quite yet,” reported Peter Schemerka from Brauhaus Rheinbach in an interview with the General Anzeiger. Although the beer can already be found at selected outlets in Rheinbach and even in Meckenheim, it is not (yet) available in England, according to Schemerka.
If one takes an exact look at the label on the bottle of Rheinbacher, it reveals where the journey could lead; it goes to the outskirts of the Sauerland to Krombach. Optically speaking, the appearance of the "Rheinbacher Premium Pils" is hardly different than the Krombacher Premium Pils. Even the coat of arms that adorns the bottle is very similar in color to the one on Krombach.
The Rhine is more famous than Krombach in Great Britain and this is something which British beer suppliers from Aldi had given thought. Let’s call the beer brewed according to German purity laws simply “Rheinbacher.” I can see it coming: The Brits who are tired of Brexit will soon be streaming on buses to Rheinbach, to treat themselves to one or another “Rheinbachers.” I’m curious if they will taste a difference...
