Gastro tip: Petit Lion Refurbishment changes style of restaurant
Bonn · After four weeks of structural restoration the restaurant Petit Lion in the Königswinter Hotel Krone is looking radiant. A lot of work went into the new style, reports hosts Christian Leve: „In some places, there were four-five layers of wallpaper on top of each other…“
The traditional restaurant dates back to 1641, but the atmosphere in the old wine bar seemed to be a bit dated. „It just wasn’t very contemporary“, explains Leve. „We wanted to be interesting for a younger audience, who didn’t like the old look very much. Nobody wears a suit to dinner really anymore.“
The parquet floor is new, the walls were straightened, the tables are left as they are, no white cloths are hiding the surfaces and the bar area even has a „dry ager“ for meat specialities. The main restaurant has space for about 40 guests and the back room seats a further 25. There’s also an outdoor terrace for up to around 40 guests.
The menu offers a mixture of „French-German-Mediterranean“ food according to head chef Sascha Heinz. It includes a grape soup with pink pepper berries (8.90 Euro) as well as baked oysters with beluga caviar, root vegetables and apple smoke (14.50 Euro). As a main course Heinz recommends the short beef rib with potato, mushrooms and red radish (served as two courses for 29 Euro), and as a dessert parsnip with white chocolate and melon (9.50 Euro).
After May 1, there will also be a business lunch (four or five single course for 9 Euro each, a two-course lunch will start at 14 Euro). On the wine menu, there are twelve open wines (0.1l from 4 Euro), for example the Sauvignon Blanc „Petit Lion“ from the vineyard Seebrich (Rheinhessen) for 4 Euro; and there are also 130 bottled wines, starting at 27 Euro, for example the Côtes du Rhône Grand Nicolet from the Nicolet vineyard (Rhône) for 27 Euro.
