School in Hennef Police presence increased after rampage threat

Hennef · After a threat was scribbled in a boys restroom in a middle school in Hennef, police increased their presence there on Friday. They are investigating the incident.

After an an unknown person scribbled a threat in the boy’s restroom that there would be a rampage in the school on Friday, police presence was increased at the Kopernikus-Realschule in Hennef. Due to false reports and rumors on social media, police released more facts later in the day. The situation apparently began on Wednesday at 10 am when scribbles made from a felt marker were found in the boys’ restroom. It read “Rampage on 20.01.2017” in a small area of a few centimeters.

Further scribbles were anti-foreigner in nature. The school informed police, who immediately took preventative measures. Because of past experience and the assessment of the situation, the threat was not measured as serious. Such a threat is normally meant to spread fear and attract public attention. Police were dispatched to the school as a precaution and to reassure students, parents and teachers.

“Nothing happened, as we expected. However, we will remain at the school until the end of the school day, showing presence and clarifying,” said police spokesperson Stefan Birk. The threat had an impact on the school attendance. Ninth and tenth grades are taught there as well as eighth grade classes from the Hennef-West Gesamtschule. The Kopernikus school rector Iris Zillinger estimated that about a third of the students were missing. “I think it’s ok. I cannot take away their concerns,” she said to the General Anzeiger early Friday afternoon. The school had left it up to the parents, whether they wanted to let their children attend on Friday. Police are investigating the incident. (Orig. text: Hannah Schmidt)
