Lighting store anniversary Old Soviet aircraft lands in Lannesdorf

Bonn · Driving past the supermarkets and lighting store on Drachenburgstraße, residents might wonder how an old plane found a new home on a rooftop in Lannesdorf. Here’s the story.

A Yakovlev Yak-18 landed on the roof of Enzinger Lighting Store in Lannesdorf on Tuesday. The owners of the light design shop, Michael and Werner Enzinger discovered the Soviet plane at a junkyard in Altenkirchen two years ago. A Soviet tandem two-seat military trainer aircraft, the brothers found it in the bushes of the junkyard.

“The company will turn 50 next year and we wanted to connect this number with something in history,” said Michael Enzinger. At first, they had thought about some kind of car from that period of time but then they discovered the old plane. In 1968, the lighting firm was established by the father and in that same year, the aircraft was brought over to Germany. The model was first put into use in 1946 in the Soviet Union.

The wing span of 10.6 meters fits perfectly on the roof, but the wings had to be dismantled to transport the aircraft to Bonn. A building permit and a green light from structural engineers had to be obtained as well. The camouflage color was stripped and the Yakovlev now sports a pared-down aluminum look.

“We really want to make a nice setting for it,” says Werner Enzinger. And the lighting element cannot be overlooked. The aircraft also has a name: Max - just like its NATO code name.
