120 firefighters deal with a blaze in Bad Godesberg

Due to unknown reasons, a fire broke out in a carpenter’s workshop Ungerathen in Bad Godesberg near the Kinopolis cinema on Saturday from around 4.15 p.m. The fire spread from the workshop on the ground floor to the rest of the building. The fire required the deployment of around 120 firefighters from the professional fire brigade, and volunteer units from Kessenich, Bad Godesberg, Lannesdorf, Mehlem, Geislar, Oberkassel and Röttgen. The Bonn fire brigade also issued an official hazard report via Warnapp NINA for about an hour and warned of possible health hazards. Because of the smoke from the fire and odour nuisance, people in the Bad Godesberg city centre were advised to stay indoors and to keep windows and doors closed. Since the flames threatened to spread to neighbouring houses, the adjacent apartments had to be evacuated. Due to the massive development of smoke, 30 residents of the surrounding buildings had to leave their apartments. Shortly after 7 p.m., the emergency services reported that the fire was under control. However, clean-up work continued into the late evening hours. A larger cloud of smoke stood over the site of operation for a longer period of time. According to the GA local reporter, it was almost impossible to see anything in one part of the road, the smoke was so dense. The police cordoned off the area within a radius of around 500 metres and tried to stop the numerous onlookers.

Another tram derailed on Quantiusstraßse

On Saturday afternoon at about 4 p.m., a tram derailed at Quantiusstraße, for unknown reasons. The incident happened in the area where the 61 and 62 trams start out for new journeys and where the drivers take a break. The affected train was supposed to set off towards the main station for its next journey when it jumped off the tracks on a tight curve. At the time, only the driver was on board. Nobody was injured. This is the third time that a train has derailed in this area in nine months: in March, a train jumped from the tracks on Quantiusstrasse and in November last year. In order to lift the train back onto the tracks, the entire crew of fire station 1 was deployed with the appropriate equipment. According to Albert Lehmann of the Bonn fire brigade, the train was completely outside the track bed. The salvage was therefore particularly difficult. It took the emergency services about three hours until the train was back on the tracks.

Pubs and restaurants in Bonn complain of a lack of qualified personnel.

Many restaurants and hotels in the Bonn area are urgently looking for staff, but claim that the market is hardly offering any qualified staff. The shortage of personnel affects the entire catering industry because there is a lack of young talent. Apparently, training in the restaurant business is not very attractive for young men and women. The Agentur für Arbeit in Bonn cannot, however, detect a shortage of employees in the gastronomy sector, which is subject to social insurance contributions, in the statistics. In May, for example, 302 skilled workers in the catering service sector were unemployed, but only 126 jobs were registered. The German Hotel and Restaurant Association of North Rhine-Westphalia complains of a major shortage of labour. “In principle, this applies to the entire industry”, says press spokesman Thorsten Hellwig. He sees both external and internal factors as reasons for this. Among the external factors are, for example, increasing academicisation or fewer school leavers.

Darknet shop for drug trafficking discovered due insufficient postage

Twelve men between the ages of 23 and 45 years face three proceedings in Bonn District Court. The professional gang allegedly dealt drugs on a grand scale online. The police found out about the ring because their mailings were underfranked were returned to uninvolved third parties. Up to 20 persons are said to have been involved. As in any other well-assorted online shop, customers could choose from a huge range of products. But instead of fashion or electronics products, were cannabis, ecstasy or MDMA. customers did not pay in Euro, but in Bitcoin. According to the prosecution, the dealers processed around 11,000 orders within ten months and delivered almost 83 kilos of cannabis products to their customers. The turnover was around 1.3 million euros. The defendants are said to have set up their warehouse in an apartment in Bonn, in which investigators secured laptops, precision scales, vacuum equipment and rubber gloves, cardboard boxes, label and stamp rolls and padded envelopes – everything necessary for professional trading. The Bonn office was only unsuitable as a sender address: the senders therefore regularly registered real companies as senders of the consignments.
