Taxi collides with ambulance: Pedestrian killed in crash in Bonn-Mehlem

MEHLEM. On Saturday afternoon, a taxi collided with a ambulance on a call-out. A 26-year-old female pedestrian was killed in the accident. The 46-year-old driver of an emergency doctor vehicle was driving on the B9 with the blue lights flashing and the siren switched on. According to the first reports he was about to cross the intersection onto the Drachenburgstraße over a red light when he collided with the taxi of a 62-year-old female driver who came from the Mainzer Straße with a green light showing. The impact caused the ambulance to be catapulted against the traffic light post and then against a tree, hitting the pedestrian in its path. The young woman was treated for her injuries on the scene but died a little bit later due to their severity. (Original text: Michael Wrobel, Axel Vogel)

Criticism and chess: Erdogan in Cologne

COLOGNE. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan probably imagined his visit to Cologne a bit differently - North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Armin Laschet met him in a small room at the airport and not a castle, and questioned the rule of law in Turkey during the conversation, saying that the relationship of the two countries was currently „overshadowed“. Thousands of Turkish people came to celebrate Erdogan. Secured by one of the largest deployments of the Cologne police the Turkish President opened the new Ditib mosque in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, attendance was „by invitation-only“. The situation remained calm despite a large number of celebrating Turkish people. An outdoor event at the mosque was cancelled due to security concerns by the city of Cologne. A decision which was criticised by the Turkish side. The anti-Erdogan demonstrations turned out to be smaller than expected. Kurdish and left-wing protesters had called for an „Erdogan not welcome“ rally. Before Erdogan left Germany, he met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Cologne again. Details of the conversation were not published. (Original text: dpa)

According to the local hunting authority there is no reason for pedestrians to avoid the Melbtal. Wild boars most likely retreat during the day and get more active during the night. It is advised to stay on the designated paths though and to keep dogs on the leash. In case you meet a group of wild boars, it is recommended to stay calm and to not approach the animals. At no times should wild boars be fed. Adjoining residents should keep their gardens properly fenced in. (Original text: Rolf Kleinfeld)
