Old government district New UN building takes shape

Bonn · Bonn is home to a large United Nations presence and the current facilities are bursting at the seam. A new building is going up in the old government district, expected to provide space for around 330 UN employees.

The construction of a new high-rise building on the UN campus in the former government district is taking shape. Being built next to the Alten Wasserwerk (Old Waterworks) which was once used as temporary housing for the German parliament, it is gradually rising up off the ground.

Around 330 United Nations staff are expected to be given a new job there. The foundation stone for the new building was laid two years ago, because the existing buildings of the UN are bursting at the seams. The new office tower will be built according to the plans of Berlin architect Stefan Lippert with a floor space area of about 20 by 30 meters.

It has 17 upper and three underground floors and a total area of 8400 square meters. Lippert was the winner of an architectural competition in 2013, organized by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR). The costs for the expansion are currently calculated at 72 million euros. At 65 meters high, the building should be much lower than its direct neighbor, the Lange Eugen, which stands 114 meters tall.

The builder is the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Bima). Completion of the project is expected in the next year. Orig. text: lis Translation: Carol Kloeppel
