International Club La Redoute Mayor supports strengthening an international Bonn

Bad Godesberg · At a speech in front of the International Club La Redoute, Mayor Sridharan talked about measures to bolster an international Bonn.

Bonn Mayor Ashok Sridharan wants to strengthen Bonn’s international profile. As guest speaker at the International Club La Redoute on Monday evening, he emphasized that as host to the United Nations, many NGOs and workers and leaders from all over the world, it was important to offer them a better infrastructure. “I will work for more international daycare centers and schools,” he said. Currently, there are nine child care facilities and three schools which fit in this category.

Mayor Sridharan said he was aware that amongst UN staff, there was a desire for more international schools. Part of the reason is that having to pay private school tuition poses a problem for some employees. The city was taking a look at a new concept, which could be considered something like a fifth Gesamtschule (high school). “I am feeling quite hopeful” commented Sridharan in front of a filled Beethoven room in the Redoute. It is the city’s intention to attract more UN organizations to Bonn.

At the traditional reception of the German UN Ambassador in New York, Bonn will give a presentation, also about the Beethoven Anniversary year coming up in 2020. Sridharan mentioned that another goal was to bring more international scientific conferences to Bonn.

In the closing discussion, club members asked about the perceived or alleged decline of the area of Bad Godesberg. The Mayor pointed out efforts that had been made to increase the feeling of security amongst residents and the strengthening of police controls. This alone, however would not be enough. The pedestrian area needs to be revitalized and the structure improved. “We’re working on it,” promised Sridharan.
