City business landscape Many changes in Bonn city center

Bonn · Some businesses with long standing tradition in Bonn city center are closing down, including a restaurant. On Sternstraße in particular there is much movement.

One again there is news from Bonn’s city center: Two long established businesses, the restaurant “Petit Poisson” and leather goods shop “Schugt an Neutor” will both be closing down. On Sternstraße, quite a few changes have taken place.

The Shugt leather goods and accessories store dates all the way back to 1848. Owner Michael Shugt says he will be shutting it down at the end of the month because he has reached an age where he no longer wants to work six days in the store and spend his Sundays doing the bookkeeping. He said he would have been happy to pass on his store to a new owner “but unfortunately I didn’t find anybody.”

It was 40 years ago when Johanna (Hanni) Reinarz and her partner Ludwig Reinarz opened the restaurant “Petit Poisson” near the state and district court on Wilhelmstraße. She recalls that fish and seafood were rather new to Bonn at that time. Their French-Mediterranean cuisine soon earned them a place at the top of the rankings amongst Bonn restaurants. Johanna Reinarz says the restaurant has been a success from beginning to end, but both she and her partner are now 67-years-old. That’s enough.

“One can also do something else,” she says. According to Reinarz, the building in which the restaurant occupies the ground level, will be converted. “I heard that there will be offices there,” she said. It’s been more than a year since “Haus der Blumen” left the corner of Friedrichstraße and Belderberg. Peter Heusgen shut down his business after 37 years because he could not find a successor.

Now, “Trinitae”, a body care shop has moved in. Many stores such as the fashion shop “Cecil” have closed their doors in the past weeks on Sternstraße. Others, such as “room nine”, want to do some converting. GA was informed that an optician would move in to one of the spaces on Sternstraße that had been vacated. On July 4, “Bulthaup designfunktion” will open at Kaiserplatz.

Bulthaup is a well-known German kitchen and appliance company. The Flamant furniture store on Fürstenstraße closed, a reason was not given. There’s more action on the opposite side where “Pomm Fritz” serves many hungry guests, and where a vegetarian restaurant is expected to open soon.
