Bonn and the Rhine-Sieg region What commuters and parents need to know about the strike

Bonn · There will be major traffic disruptions in Bonn on Wednesday. Buses and trams will not run because of a strike. Some daycare centres and possibly rubbish collection and the Helios Clinic are also affected.

Traffic chaos threatens Bonn on Wednesday. Buses and trams are will probably not be running all day because of a token strike, said the public utility company on Monday morning. The Verdi union has called its members out on a whole day strike and the Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) is also affected.

SWB spokesperson Michael Henseler told the GA it expected the strike to begin with the start of operations early on Wednesday morning. As the token strike is also taking place in Cologne, Line 16 and 18 trams will also not run.

Buses only partially affected

Buses run by the Rhine-Sieg Transport Association (RSVG) are not affected. Managing director Michael Reinhardt told the GA on Monday morning: “there are currently no announcements from Verdi.” Reinhardt continued: “I assume our buses will be running.” He reported that the lines running on Wednesday would be published on the internet on Tuesday evening. However, he feared there could be disruption and full buses if SWB passengers change onto RSVG buses. A spokesman told the GA that RVK buses would also run to timetable.

There could be disruption, significant at times, to local transport and bus traffic in the Cologne and Bonn metropolitan areas. The RSVG therefore advises its passengers and customers to plan adequate additional time for journeys with local public transport on Wednesday. The company said the following lines, jointly licensed to the RSVG and SWB, would also likely be affected during the strike: 640 completely, 550 isolated journeys and SB55 a large number of journeys.

Deutsche Bahn and Mittelrheinbahn trams and trains are also not affected. Regional trains (RB) and Regional Express trains (RE) will run according to timetable, as will as the S-Bahn.

The strike is due to end with the start of operations on Thursday morning and normal operations will resume again.

Daycare centres affected

Daycare centres in Bonn and the region are also affected by the strike. The city of Bonn said on Monday that the city administration had no binding information from the unions on the extent of the strike and the affected daycare centres. In the meantime they have set up a hotline for city kindergartens under the number 0228 77 55 44.

Parents can get information about those kindergartens in the strike - on the basis of information currently available to the administration – from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm.

The union said daycare centres in Troisdorf and Hennef would also be affected. The Deichkinder daycare centre in Hennef and the Kunterbunt daycare centre in Stoßdorf will be closed. An emergency group will be set up at the Bröler Waldmäusen. “Otherwise only individual employees are striking,” said city spokesperson Dominique Müller-Grote.

Rubbish collection and the Helios Clinic potentially affected

Rubbish collection in the Rhine-Sieg district could also be affected by the upcoming token strike. However, the RSAG will not be able to say until Wednesday morning whether and to what extent rubbish bins will not be emptied.

They advise definitely putting bins out for emptying on the day of collection. There are no special follow-up appointments for bins not emptied because of the strike. Those affected can instead put rubbish in neutral bags or small cartons and add them to the next regular bin-emptying day.

It was also unclear on Monday how many employees at the Siegburg Helios Clinic would participate in the strike. However, the clinic said emergency care would be provided for the day.

Among other things, Verdi is demanding a salary increase of 6 per cent, at least Euro 200, for union and local government employees.
