Carnival in pictures Jecks out and about in Bonn and the region

BONN · GA-photographers got right into the thick of things at carnival events and parades. Here’s a summary of how carnival went down according to the officials and a look at all the photos from Bonn and beyond!

It was a “wonderful parade” said parade director Axel Wolf at the Rose Monday press conference given by parade organizers, police and the fire department. “There were clearly more people out there this year than in the past year,” he added. He estimated that there were around 250,000 parade spectators this year.

Medical workers and volunteer helpers report that it was a remarkably quiet day. Spokesperson Heiko Basten said they treated 37 people, including four alcohol-related maladies, and one under 18-years-old. They treated eleven minor injuries but nothing worse than cuts.

In terms of security, police superintendent Klaus Kapellner said they especially monitored areas in the north including Maxstraße, Heerstraße and Vorgebirgstraße where young people were hanging out, displaying “alcohol-induced aggressive behavior.” A total of six persons were taken into custody. Police received no complaints of sexual harassment or assault.

In comparison to Cologne with several thousand police, Bonn had a modest team of around 350 police officers deployed. On the whole, Bonn’s Rose Monday Parade in the inner city remained “a cheerful and joyous event,” said Wolf. The parade director emphasized, “Such a small contingency of police at such a big event speaks for Bonn and Rose Monday.”
