Bonn Hauptbahnhof It’s unwrapped but renovations will continue

Bonn · Things are looking a bit shinier from the outside. Now onto some structural renovations to keep passengers dry.

After around two months, the cleaning of the facade of Bonn’s central train station is complete. It’s been unwrapped and the scaffolding is coming down to reveal a bright and shiny new surface. But renovations will continue; in a few weeks work will begin to renovate the run-down roof of the hall. It’s leaky and has been letting passengers get wet for years now.

The façade cleaning came at a cost of 60,000 euro. Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) says 8.7 million euro will be spent on the renovation of the train station, erected in 1883/1884. It took them a little longer than expected to clean the façade because of some rainy periods which did not allow them to use their sandblasting method.

Inside the entrance hall, a new coat of paint has helped to brighten up the area and make it more inviting. The next stage of work on the outdoor hall will begin November 7 and it will require Platform 1 to be completely closed off to passengers. The current wood construction at the end of the platform will be replaced with concrete. As well, they need to work on the overhead tram wiring. It is not clear how long this work will take. The Deutsche Bahn said they planned to release information about the next renovation steps at the end of October.

Planning at the moment calls for the roof of the outdoor hall to include glass elements which will let in more light, especially at Platform 1. A total of 5,000 square meters of roof, around the size of a football field, must be renewed. Steel pieces will be freed of rust and given a new coat. The supporting framework must also be renewed and a new drainage system installed. All work is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
