Brazilian jazz this weekend It’s all about the rhythm

Bonn · It looks like a great weekend to go up on the roof of the National Art Museum on the B9 and hear some Brazilian jazz. But this jazz sound may be a little different than what you expect.

“Samba Jazz Cube” sounds like it might have something to do with Brazilian carnival, big drums, dancers and boa feathers but the name is deceiving. The band comes with a variety of music somewhere between traditional and Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), and a serving of jazz improvisation on the side as well as tons of passion.

This Sunday, the quartet plays at the GA-Sommergarten (GA-Summer garden) on the rooftop of the Bundeskunsthalle (National Art Museum). It promises to be a delightful and rhythmic morning.

“It’s not so easy to define what we are playing,” said bassist André de Cayres. He and guitarist João Luís Nogueira Pinto founded the band in 2009 at a university in Essen. “The basis is MPB but because we are purely instrumental and we also take some liberties, so in some ways we are right on the border.” Especially with their own compositions which are on their brand new debut album. Besides the typical upbeat pieces, there are also some that sound astoundingly melancholy. These are influenced by the end of the 19th Century fusion of European dance and African rhythm, “Choro” which has become popular again in the past years.

On flute, Morgana Morena represents this style, also adding some color with her improvisation. While the typical idea of Brazilian music is up-tempo sambas and laid back Bossa Nova, “Samba Jazz Cube” strives to show rhythms from the different regions of Brazil.

GA-Sommergarten: from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, “Samba Jazz Cube” plays on Sunday, July 23 on the roof of the Bundeskunsthalle. Free entry. Bitburger and the Cafe-Restaurant are the culinary partners for this event. There is an elevator inside the hall for the physically-impaired. (Orig. text: Thomas Kölsch)
