At the former Ermekeil Barracks, there is housing for refugees but also an official processing center for those seeking asylum. On a lower level floor of the barracks, there is a place for people to wait until their status is reviewed. Members and friends of the Rotary Club Bonn International (RCBI) took on the project of renovating the two waiting rooms to give refugees a more pleasant and friendly environment.

Members of the RCBI armed themselves with paint brushes, paint buckets and other utensils to scrape walls, remove old paint, and put a new coat up on the walls along with some fancy decorations. Around 12 people participated in the renovation on September 17 in Building 3. The two rooms are designated for recreational purposes. Refugees can play a game of table tennis while they are waiting to be called. They are now brightly painted with aquatic and picturesque decals.

Monkia Hörig, President of RCBI, said, “We see this project as a signal to the refugees that their plight is not going unseen.“ She thanked helpers from the German Red Cross and the local government for helping to make the project possible. The newly founded Rotary Club will soon follow up on this project with other renovation activities, including one at a Bonn kindergarten and they plan to give some hands-on support in a clothing distribution center for refugees.
