Disruptions at start of week Icy roads are causing problems in and around Bonn

Bonn · It has been an unpleasant start to Monday morning with drizzle, snow and black ice causing disruptions. There have already been several minor accidents on the A3.

Snowfalls and black ice are causing problems on the roads in Bonn and neighbouring areas at the start of the week. Police said there had been several minor accidents on the A3 motorway in the Siebengebirge. The motorway to Frankfurt was temporarily closed during the night because of several lorries across the carriageway.

There were also problems on the A4 motorway at Cologne where things were slow moving because of ice. Police said there had been repeated problems during the morning in the Bergisches Land because of black ice. One person was injured in an accident on the A3 near Koblenz involving five lorries and several cars. A driver lost control of his lorry on the A45 between Meinerzhagen and Lüdenscheid and ended up blocking the carriageway with his truck. Traffic was also queuing on the A1 during the morning because of a jackknifed lorry.

At Frankfurt airport, 170 flights had to be cancelled by early morning because of the weather conditions. Airport personnel were still busy clearing the snow from two runways.

The German Weather Service has issued an official warning of snowfall in Bonn and the Rhine-Sieg district. With maximum temperatures of three degrees Celsius, snow can be expected during the morning. Above 400 metres, the meteorologists say between five and ten centimetres of fresh snow are expected, reaching 15 centimetres in places. The weather service says there could be widespread ice.

Towards midday, the snow (rain) fall should ease and it will remain mainly cloudy in Bonn and the region. The rain will first start again during the night. The following days will also remain grey with temperatures rising to a maximum of 5 degrees Celsius towards the middle of the week.
