Around 60 children and parents from the Independent Bonn International School (IBIS) joined in the fun at the Schweinheim Carnival parade on Sunday, 19 February. It is the first time the school has taken part in the event.

Participants took inspiration for their costumes from the school’s name and symbol, the long-legged ibis wading bird. The lead up to the parade was spent busily making outfits, learning more about Carnival traditions and collecting donations.

Appearing in the parade as the IBIS Birds, the children sported long, white wings and beaks and some got very creative and painted ibis on their faces. The school’s “Didge World Music Group” provided a rousing musical accompaniment. The group is a didgeridoo club with around ten children who make their own instruments and perform under the leadership of assistant teacher Charles Gasse.

The school said: “It was a wonderful experience for all our schoolgirls and boys to take part in a Carnival parade for the first time and to join in the celebrations.”
