A look back in time How Bad Godesberg Kinopolis was created 20 years ago

Bad Godesberg · The first rendering showed the Kinopolis in Bad Godesberg looking like a folding camera, but this plan was rejected. Here’s a look back at how Kinopolis cam about.

Bad Godesberg gets a movie theater: That was the big topic in the 90s when politics discussed the transformation of Moltkeplatz and everyone was looking forward to a new cinema in the district. So originally the design looked like a folding camera, which doesn’t have much in common with the building we see today. Here’s an overview of the origin of the multiplex cinema:

1988 - 1993: Cinema operator Dieter Hertel wants to build a theater in Bad Godesberg. District Manager Norbert Hauser brings Moltkeplatz into the conversation as a possible site for the new cinema. In the next few years, there are setbacks, then in the course of discussions, first designs for Moltkeplatz are put on the table. Negotiations are started with Helmut Brunotte, who wants to invest in the cinema.

1994: The project comes to a standstill, because the German film and television company Ufa is interested in a second big movie theater on Bornheimer Straße. Brunotte believes that Bonn can only support one multiplex cinema.

1995: The Bonn local authority real estate office is now also in negotiations with one of the largest German cinema operators, the Theile Filmtheaterbetrieben. Architect Bernd Meier expands the movie theater planning.

1996: In September, the district council Bad Godesberg gives the go-ahead for the Kinopolis, which will cost about 31 million Deutschmarks.

March 18, 1997: The foundation stone is laid for the new cinema. The administration is concerned about contaminated areas in the soil.

August 22, 1997: Topping-out ceremony at Moltkeplatz.

December 10, 1997: At 8 pm, 2,300 visitors flock to the first performances in the eleven theater rooms of the cineplex. Among the films, "James Bond 007 - Tomorrow never dies" and "L.A. Confidential ". (Orig. text: Richard Bongartz Translation:ck)
