Rosenmontag Parade 2018 Horses to stay in the stables during Bonn carnival

Bonn · The carnival season is just a week old, but nearly everyday brings new bad news. Now the decision of the large corps in regard to horses as part of the Rosenmontag parade worries the carnival fans.

The only horses to take part in the parade on the biggest day of the carnival season, the Rosenmontag, will be the ones pulling the baggage carriage. The general staff of the City Soldiers Bonn decided that the riding corps will take part, but without horses. For the transport of the hand-outs like sweets and flowers, the Beuel carnival groups are still looking for alternative ideas. „This decision also affects the Weiberfastnacht parade and the LiKüRa parade“, commandant Hans Hallitzky explained in an interview with the GA.

The decision came after the riding stables’ withdrawal and a horse carriage accident involving his carriage driver. But there is another reason for the decision: Who is liable for the consequences of a riding accident during the Rosenmontag parade? Commandant Hallitzky: „After each parade in the past, I was so happy that the horses got back to the stables safe and sound. I don’t need this kind of worry in the current situation.“ The general staff of the guard of honour will decide on the matter. The managing director already suggested: No riding horses. And no horse-drawn carriages either.

„The fight over the horses in this case isn’t worth it anymore. The animal welfarists have won“, said commandant Thomas Janicke. „This doesn’t mean the end of all horses in the carnival season, we are thinking about riders’ quadrilles and autumn hunts.“

A fight with the festivities committee had played into the decision too. Ralf Wolanski, commandant for the Bonn City Soldiers, is understanding: „Looking at everything that has happened, it doesn’t surprise me. We will decide next week how we will handle the situation. We cannot do without horses when it come to the baggage carriages, they are historical vehicles, made to be pulled by horses.“ (Original text: GA Translation: Mareike Graepel)
