Asparagus season coming Heated fields produce the first asparagus

Niederaußem · For many who have been introduced to white asparagus in Germany, the asparagus season can’t come fast enough. If the weather cooperates, we may just see more of this delicacy on supermarket shelves in a couple weeks.

Shortly before Easter, the first asparagus was harvested in North Rhine-Westphalia - but on heated fields and not in any significant quantities, as a spokesman for the NRW Chamber of Agriculture said on Tuesday. For the real harvest, the necessary sunshine is still lacking.

"The weather, the sun, this is crucial. It has to heat up the ground," said an asparagus advisor to the Chamber of Agriculture. As soon as the sun comes out, it could all go very quickly. Asparagus season normally begins in the middle of April. The expert says that this could still be possible for the coming season if the weather starts to play along.
