Eurocup semifinal Germany vs. France: Public Viewing

BONN · Tonight is the big game between France and Germany. With friendly weather, Public Viewing is sure to be popular.

It isn’t officially the weekend yet, but that will not stop people from going out tonight. Whether cheering for Germany or France, fans will certainly take advantage of the nice weather to find some Public Viewing where they can join in the exciting atmosphere with other soccer enthusiasts. It’s a great opportunity for Bonn’s international community who aren’t familiar with the sport to get caught up in the soccer fever. The big showdown comes tonight, Thursday evening at 9 p.m. when Germany takes on France in the semifinal of the Eurocup. France will have the hometown advantage, playing in Marseille, but many German supporters will be cheering from afar.

A few details if you want to be in the know: whoever wins tonight (Germany or France) will take on Portugal in the final on Sunday at 9 p.m. Portugal defeated Wales on Wednesday in the semifinal, 2-0, to advance to the final. The game tonight will be shown on television channel ZDF.

The German coach is Joachim Löw, but they call him “Jogi” for short. Two German players, Mario Gomez and Sami Khedira are out with injuries. Team captain Bastian Schweinsteiger will likely play despite a previous knee injury; people call him “Schweini”. The youngest player on the German team is Joshua Kimmich at 21-years-old, and Julian Draxler is not much older at 22. Manuel Neuer, at 30-years-old is a highly experienced and praised goalie, having won Germany’s player of the year award in 2014.

On the French side, the coach is Didier Deschamps, a former stand-out French soccer player who played for teams such as Chelsea, Juventus and Marseille. 25-year-old Antoine Griezmann is the most written about player in the French newspapers, and he is the big hope for putting France on the scorecard. He is viewed as one of the most valuable players in Europe. 29-year-old Hugo Lloris is goalkeeper for France, and captains the French national team. He is considered one of the best goalkeepers worldwide.
