Restaurant scene Gault & Millau ranks restaurants in Bonn and region

BONN · The best restaurant in NRW is in Bergisch Gladbach. But Bonn’s “Halbedel’s Gasthaus” also ranked highly.

Rainer Maria Halbedel from "Halbedel's Gasthaus" in Bad Godesberg can be very pleased. The chef was ranked by gourmet guide Gault & Millau as third among the twelve best chefs in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Chef Halbedel received 17 out of 20 possible points. With that, the chef repeated his success from the previous year when he also received 17 points.

"Halbedel's Gasthaus" also landed in the list of best restaurants in North Rhine-Westphalia. With 17 points, the restaurant is ranked third, sharing that place with nine other restaurants. The Vendôme in Bergisch Gladbach was ranked first with 19.5 points and Le Moissonnier in Cologne received 18 points.

Two other restaurants in Bonn were awarded in the rankings. “Oliveto” restaurant received 14 points from the testers, earning them a ‘chef’s hat’. And 24-year-old Felix Kaspar reached 16 out of 20 possible points in the category “Up-and-comer of the year.” Critics had praise for Kaspar, noting that his dishes displayed perfect taste and “great craftsmanship as well as the best products from France and the region.”

“Vendôme” was rated the best restaurant in NRW. It has been at the top of the list for ten years. The expert testers admired how the 53-year-old chef, Joachim Wissler manages to carry out his work with “maximum precision”, without “cramped stylistics.” “He does not make it easy for his guests, because his menu requires attention,” they commented, mentioning a menu including venison with juniper melon salad and a special sprout pesto.

Two restaurants in Bad Neuenahr also made the rankings. In the list of the 20 best restaurants in Rhineland-Pfalz, “Steinheuer’s” received 19 out of 20 points. The “Landgasthof Poststuben” received 16 points, landing in fifth place.

The new Gault & Millau gourmet guide, 725 pages, is available beginning Tuesday, November 15.
