Jazz in the Beer Garden Free SWB-concerts on Sundays in the Rheinaue

Bonn · Free jazz concerts in the Rheinaue beer garden started last Sunday and a change of timing from Fridays to Sunday afternoons is proving very popular.

Changing “Jazz in the Beer Garden” from Fridays to Sundays to attract a new audience seems to have worked for event organiser Dirk Dötsch. “See for yourself,” he says with a glance at the Rheinaue. “Despite the beautiful weather, there is nothing going on in the park and everyone is up here: families with children, walkers, pensioners, lots of young people and also the regulars from the Friday night jazz.” There is not a single space available in the Rheinaue beer garden, which also gives the SWB jazz event its name.

“We’re here for the first time,” says Jens Weber from Ramersdorf and adds that Sunday is an ideal time for him and his wife. After 25 years of Friday jazz, for this 26th event and for the next quarter century, music fans can now get used to Sundays, especially when the jazz bands appearing hit the “Sunday afternoon sound” as well as The DD Hot 5 from the Netherlands. They thrilled guests in the Rheinaue with their smooth traditional jazz and Dixieland sound, inviting guests to swing along to music from Chris Barber to Amy Winehouse.

“The DD Hot 5 have already been here several times,” says Dötsch. “The Dutch have a certain core competence in jazz. They perform jazz that is fun…exactly right for a Sunday. Young people also enjoy listening to it.”

The five musicians from Holland certainly seemed to succeed in entertaining the diverse public with mainstream, Dixieland, Bepop and Rock’n’Roll. Dirk Dötsch looks down happily on the stage and beer garden and says: “This time we really seem to have got everything right.”

Jazz in the Beer Garden is on every Sunday from 21 May to 20 August 2017 from 2-5pm at the beer garden in the Rheinaue. Entry is free. Details of artists playing can be found here.
