Sunshine, pollen, BBQ plans… Fantastic weather this weekend

Good day, sunshine! Not a drop of rain in sight this weekend - yet, the good weather doesn’t mean good news for everybody - the pollen count will be very high. Also good to know: Where are you allowed to have a BBQ in a public space. While the April showed it’s moody side weather-wise, spring has sprung now.

With temperatures of about 25 degrees, up to 13 hours of sunshine per day and only the odd cloud, we can expect the first day(s) of summer this weekend. The German Weather Service (DWD) recommends bringing out the sunscreen lotion immediately: „The sun is quite high already“, said DWD meteorologist Malte Witt.

„This kind of weather is normal, it can happen that April days are already quite summerly warm.“ He added that the temperatures will remain high for the start of the week as well, it might rain on Tuesday or Wednesday though. While many were longing for the warmer season, the rise in temperature also means that people with fair skin, allergy sufferers and people with heart diseases need to be careful.

Tips for people allergic to pollen can be found here. In case you fancy a BBQ this weekend: In many public places in Bonn it’s allowed to have a barbecue, yet some things need to be kept in mind. Safety comes first and also protection of the environment of course - and other members of the public should not be bothered by smoke, smells or flying ash. Keep in mind: Not everywhere in the city are BBQs in public places permitted. While it is generally allowed to have a BBQ in public green areas, public squares and roads are exempt from this.

In the Rheinaue alone you can find 12 designated BBQ spots - open fireplaces with a metal grid and garbage disposal bins nearby. BBQs are not permitted in the Japanese Gardens, the Rose Gardens and the Garden for the Blind as well as on the dog meadows and in the shelter huts. Many other spots include the ones created by the Waldfreunde in Duisdorf, the sports grounds Oberer Lyngsberg, near the shelter hut Am Hardtweiher in the Ennert as well as in Wachtberg, Königswinter, Alfter and Rheinbach.

Having a BBQ is strictly not allowed on playgrounds and soccer fields, in the tree nursery forest, in the Bürgerpark Oberkassel, in the park in the Dottendorf centre, on the apple alley at the Venusberg, at the Hölder in Röttgen, at the Drachenstein park in Mehlem, in the Panoramapark in Rüngsdorf and the Redoutenpark in Bad Godesberg and also not in the Stadtpark. The university Bonn has prohibited BBQs on its sites, like the Hofgarten at the Poppelsdorfer Allee, near the Juridicum and around the castle Poppelsdorf.

Keep in mind to maintain a distance of 100 meters to any forest, and 25 meters to any residential area. If you want to light up your grill under a tree, keep a distance of two meters as a minimum from the tree’s crown. Single-use BBQs are not allowed - despite not being very environmentally friendly, they have no „feet“ to keep a safe distance from the ground. The ground beneath a BBQ should not be burned or scorched. Please only use safe fire lighters, and no liquids to light your BBQ.

„Never leave the BBQ unattended“, warns a spokesperson of Bonn’s city council. A Rhine patrol took up their work already to ensure all rules are respected at all times, and inspect parts of the city until 2am in the night, on Thursdays before national holidays and on Fridays from 8pm, on Saturdays from 4pm and on Sundays and national holidays already from 10am. Not obeying the BBQ rules may result in a fine of up to 1000 Euro. Original text: GA/dpa, Gabriele Immenkeppel Translation: Mareike Graepel
