A 61 near Meckenheim Driver on the run after serious accident

Gelsdorf · Late Tuesday evening, there was a major accident on Autobahn 61 in the direction towards Koblenz. A driver who was involved in the accident is on the run.

Rescue workers were called to Autobahn 61 late Tuesday evening, between Meckenheim and Bad Neuenahr. According to the autobahn police, it was a major accident with two vehicles involved. The time of the accident was around 10:30 pm.

Police reports say a 41-year-old driver from the Ahrweiler district wanted to overtake several trucks with his car. While he was trying to pass the trucks, another car came from behind, bounced against the middle protection barrier and then against the passing car. The second car was from the district of Mayen-Koblenz.

As a result of the collision, both cars lost control and hit a truck in the right lane. One of the cars turned over and landed on its roof, the other crashed into a tree. The passenger of the second car was trapped and had to be freed by emergency workers.

The driver of one car fled on foot from the scene of the accident and left his passenger behind. Two persons who were found at the scene were delivered to nearby hospitals. Damage was estimated at 19,000 euros.

Police had to close off one lane which lead to backed up traffic. The police autobahn station in Mendig is looking for witnesses who may have seen a suspicious person on foot in the vicinity, perhaps looking for a ride. Anyone having information is asked to call (02652) 97 95 0. (ga)
