Forest in Venusberg Cyclist allegedly chases pup through forest

Bonn · On Friday, a cyclist is said to have scolded a woman and then chased her dog through the forest. The incident was on Facebook, sparking a barrage of criticism. The cyclist describes what happened differently than the dog owner.

On Friday afternoon on the Venusberg, a 53-year-old woman was out walking her three dogs near the Kaiser Wilhelm monument, when a cyclist came up suddenly and unexpectedly from behind. The woman told GA that she had asked him why he didn’t make himself noticeable and he became aggressive. He swore at the woman. “When I thought he was gone, the cyclist turned around, came back slowly and yelled,” she explained. She wishes to remain anonymous because of fear for the man.

After an insulting exchange of words, the man left and chased the young dog through the forest on his bike. The daughter of the dog owner posted a description of the man on Facebook to enlist help in finding him. The post was shared nearly 7,000 times as of Tuesday afternoon.

The woman has filed a complaint with police, as confirmed by spokesperson Michael Beyer. It seems the identity of the cyclist has been determined, but not by police. According to the description, the cyclist was wearing a jersey of the Cycling Association RSC Rheinbach.

When the chairman of the cycling club, Josef Göttlicher learned of the incident, he addressed all members with an e-mail and received a reply quickly. “A longtime member got in touch with me,” he said and that member described the incident very differently. He had been biking past her at walking pace, while she had two dogs on leashes and a puppy running free. She insulted him and asked him why he had not rung his bicycle bell.

Subsequently, there was an exchange of words, in which the cyclist admitted he had used a wrong choice of words. According to Göttlicher, the cyclist said he biked away and that the puppy was running next to him, and somehow vanished into the woods. He did not chase the pup. Rather, in the end he helped to search for the dog.

The 53-year-old says she declined his offer for help after the incident. The man had suddenly become friendly after a person she knew had arrived. “She saw how the cyclist followed my dog and suddenly, I had a witness.” According to both dog owner and Göttlicher, the man apologized for the incident.

After around fifteen minutes, “Hank” the puppy came crawling out of the undergrowth. The dog owner wants to complete a special training program with the young animal. She believes the puppy was traumatized, which can lead to it becoming panicky when it encounters a bike as a mature dog.
