October 1 Court allows Sunday shopping at Bonn Fest

Bonn · In an urgent ruling on Wednesday, a Cologne court decided that shops will be permitted to open on Sunday, October 1 from 1 pm to 6 pm in conjunction with Bonn Fest.

This year’s Bonn Fest has new partners and new ideas and organizers aim to make it even more attractive than in years past. The 20th Bonn Fest runs September 29 through October 1. In a presentation of the program, City-Marketing Bonn member Karina Kröber promised that the three main public squares of the city would be lively and filled with life.

Looming overhead had been a complaint filed by the union Verdi, which did not want to allow the stores to be open on Sunday. But an urgent court ruling in Cologne dismissed the complaint, allowing the stores to go ahead and open on Sunday, October 1 from 1pm until 6 pm.

The union is also going to court in numerous other cities to take issue with Sunday shopping. Verdi argues that Sunday sales should not be permitted to be an instrument for economic growth.

Around 350,000 visitors last year
