A3 accident Corvette crashes into truck

Königswinter · A truck making an illegal pass in the far left lane and a speeding corvette resulted in a dreadful accident.

Two persons were seriously injured when their sports car, traveling at a high speed crashed into the back of a truck on the A3 autobahn near Bockeroth. The accident occurred on Monday evening. The driver of the truck was a 24-year-old Romanian who tried to pass slower traffic by going into the far left lane. Trucks are not allowed in the far left fast lane so he was considered at fault. The sports car was racing down the fast lane just as the truck pulled over into the lane.

The 45-year-old male driver of the Corvette and his 36-year-old female passenger had to be freed from the wreckage by the Sankt Augustin fire department. They were rushed by ambulance to the hospital and are thought to be in serious to critical condition. The 24 year-old truck driver from Bucharest suffered from shock and was also taken to hospital. Fire department spokesperson Sascha Lienesch said motorists behind the accident scene didn’t immediately clear the way for an emergency lane and this cost them time in getting there.

The injured couple are from Main-Taunus county. A motorist who was just behind the accident said his own speedometer read 200 kph but it was thought the Corvette was going even faster. When the truck pulled into the lane, there was no place for the Corvette to go so it slammed on the brakes but couldn’t avoid an accident. It hit the middle barrier and then the truck. Witnesses called police to report the crash.

Police had to close the autobahn at the Bonn-Siegburg junction to tend to the accident. Drivers coming from Cologne were re-directed to the A560. At midnight, traffic was allowed to drive around the crash site and the complete autobahn opened later in the night.
