Delays in Bonn Continuous frost is problematic for city trains

Bonn · The frosty temperatures are not only a challenge for people. City railway traffic in Bonn has also been affected by the cold temperatures, causing morning delays.

“Our vehicles suffer to the extreme. That’s why there are general delays this morning in public transportation.” SWB, Bonn’s publication transportation authority, sent out this Tweet this morning because it was also too cold for the city railway. The frosty temperatures caused 20-minute delays for metro Lines 63 and 66.

Spokesperson for the SWB, Michael Henseler explained that the reason for the problems with the railway is that there are systems on the trains which are operate with compressed air. The water components in these mechanisms, used in operating the doors for example, can freeze up and no longer function properly. “Then the trains have to thaw,” says Henseler. They have to be heated up until everything is working again. Only then can the trains leave the station. The same can happen with buses.

Trams themselves are not affected by the frost. “The systems there are electrically controlled,” says Henseler. However, the overhead lines can freeze up and this can lead to delays. At these frozen points, the trams can only move through slowly, according the to spokesperson.

There were also delays this morning on Line 18. Between 5:30 and 7:30 am, several tracks in the direction of Bonn were not in use. (Orig. text: Alexander Hertel)
