Raid aftermath Concerns about Arcadia Passage

Bad Godesberg · Politicians praised police action in Monday’s raid and addressed concerns about the area. A meeting with Arcadia Passage owners will take place on Friday.

What happens now in the aftermath of the police raid at Aennchnplatz on Monday afternoon? On Friday, the newly-elected head of City Marketing, Jürgen Bruder will meet with owners of the Arcadia Passage to discuss just that. “District representatives had tried in the past to prevent the establishment of game halls, shisha bars and the like,” said Bruder. It wasn’t possible, however because it was private property. Now Bruder wants to meet with owners and see “what the possibilities are for gaining control of the situation there.”

Bruder is referring to the area between Aennchenplatz, Villichgasse and Koblenzer Straße. This is where police and public order officers closed down a shisha bar, supermarket, and two real estate offices as a result of violent confrontations occurring there in mid-August. The exact reasons for the violent attacks remain unclear.

Investigations are ongoing so police would not comment other than to say they hoped the raids would help shed light on what caused the violence. Officials would also not comment on whether or not any other properties were being observed or if more raids were planned. Rumors that Arcadia Passage was searched on Monday did not prove true.

At the political level, there was praise for the police work but also concern about the area. District Mayor Simone Stein-Lücke said the focus on Bad Godesberg and the clamp down sent a good signal. Politician Philipp Lerch (CDU) said that law enforcement officers had demonstrated clearly that there were no areas where unlawful conduct would be tolerated, and emphasized the importance of a strong police presence. Another local politician, Ulli Hauschild (FDP) said during the daytime in that area it was different, “but evenings around the bar, the mix of people changes and it is not good.” Unlawful parking and a high noise level become routine.

Monika Heinzel of the Green party emphasized that it would be important to include this area in the upcoming workshop on the design and configuration of the Bad Godesberg inner city. For now, the four businesses will remain sealed up. They have been declared not reliable in keeping with commercial code and are banned for at least one year from registering any businesses.
