Bonn UN Campus stop Commuters are happy with the new stop

Bonn · The Bonn UN Campus stop has been in use for two months now and has been welcomed by passengers.

Around 20 people get off the regional train at the new Bonn UN Campus stop. It is 8.07am on a normal workday morning. The stop has now been in use for two months and four regional trains stop at the new station: RE5 (DB Regio NRW) between Cologne and Wesel, RB 26 (Transregio) between Cologne-Messe/Deutz and Remagen, RB (DB Regio NRW) between Bonn and Ahrbrück and the RB 48 between Wuppertal and Bonn-Mehlem. Nevertheless, in some places it still looks like a construction site: red and white barriers separate the two tracks from the road and the bike path and the grit for the paving still lies on the platforms. The outer areas are also still wasteland.

“An additional wind shelter with a new information screen was subsequently installed on the platform,” a spokesman for the railway told the GA. “The barriers have been put up temporarily. A city bike parking facility will be built in the immediate vicinity,” he continued. At the moment, commuters are still chaining their bikes to the staircase railings. The final construction of a fence or railings and the design of the outer area still need to be agreed with the city. “The same is true of the outer areas on civic land,” said the DB spokesman.

“I tend to use the new stop less,” said one commuter, who travels daily to work from Bonn to Cologne, even though she lives round the corner. However, she is now using the new stop because of the construction works at Bonn main station. It does have one advantage: because you get on sooner here, you still get a seat for the journey to Cologne.

The new stop is an improvement for all those who travel daily between Cologne and Bonn. “It is definitely more comfortable,” said another young woman. Previously she always rode her bike to the main station to take the train from there to Cologne.

New stop has caused some anger further south

Up to seven trains an hour currently stop at the two platforms. Passengers can travel directly to Koblenz, Mainz, Ahrbrück, Cologne or Wesel. Further connections are not planned at the moment. “A long distance stop is unfortunately not possible due to the length of the platform,” said Deutsche Bahn.

The new stop has caused anger further south. The Regionalexpress RE5 no longer stops in Oberwinter since the timetable change in December. A station on the route had to be dropped for the additional stop in Bonn.

Neighbours also initially condemned the new construction. “It is really loud when the trains arrive and brake,” reports one resident of the neighbouring housing development in Genscherallee. The announcements can be heard, particularly at night. “Nevertheless, you use the station when it’s there,” he says.

When the next train arrives at 8.47am and the doors open, platform 2 is suddenly full. More than 100 passengers leave the train and stream through the underpass towards the government district. Some of them stop at the two bus stops on Genscherallee. Bus lines 610, 611 and 630 and the N10 night bus leave from here towards Heiderhof, Lessenich and Duisdorf. At the moment, the bus stops consist of only two shelters. The city put up temporary structures during the World Climate Conference because of delivery problems. “The civil engineering office is currently examining whether the shelters will remain or be replaced by the originally intended constructions. The supplier can now deliver again,” said Werner Esch from the civil engineering office.

The neighbouring Bundeskunsthalle has noticed that the stop has been well received. “We are getting very positive feedback from our visitors…as the journey here has become noticeably more comfortable,” explains Sven Bergmann, press officer for the Bundeskunsthalle.
