Bonn University Commemorative stamp for Bonn University’s 200 year anniversary

Bonn · A special 45 cent stamp has been on sale since last Thursday to celebrate Bonn University’s 200 year anniversary.

The postage stamp is an award for the many “inspirations and milestones” that have emerged from the university during this time, praised State Secretary Michael Meister from the German Ministry of Finance, which officially issues German commemorative stamps, at a celebration in the university’s festival hall.

The square stamp was designed by the graphic designer Andreas Hoch from Baltmannsweiler. It shows a silhouette of a corner tower of the electoral palace, the founding seal and the first sentence of the foundation charter.

This document was not delivered by post in 1818 but rather by a messenger from Aachen, reported university rector, Michael Hoch. It was not until almost a hundred years later in 1903 that there was a first post room in the building as well as a post district of the Imperial Post.

The rector and the chancellor, who is responsible for finances, can today only dream of the then guaranteed quota of free deliveries. With a budget of half a million Euros for postcards, letters and packages, the university is one of the largest Bonn customers of today’s post office, despite progressive digitalisation, reported Hoch to the Deutsche Post chief financial officer Melanie Kreis, who was attending. 25,000 letters and packages are distributed each year from the post room to 250 properties. The university recently acquired one of the street scooters developed by Deutsche Post for this purpose.
