After security breach Cologne/Bonn airport increases security staff

Cologne · More security workers will be on duty at Cologne/Bonn airport to prevent people from reaching the secured area without having gone through proper controls.

Following a security breach Monday at Cologne/Bonn airport, more security personnel will be in place to cover the gates. The measure is to prevent people in the future from getting into the secured area without having been controlled. According to airport spokesperson, Alexander Weise, additional employees will be on duty at the gates from now on to make sure what happened on Monday is never repeated.

As reported, a 62-year-old Spaniard got into the secured area in Terminal 1 on Monday morning without having been checked by security personnel. According to airport information, he gained entrance by going through an exit for persons who have only hand luggage. This caused major chaos, with the terminal having to be evacuated and sniff dogs deployed. Around 2,500 people were affected. Police found and arrested the man around noon. It turned out that he was looking for the quickest way to get to his plane for a flight to Faro in Portugal.

Airport authorities are now proofing if extra costs were incurred due to the breach. “The incident is being analyzed and reconstructed,” said Weise. “Then we can look at the consequences.” (Orig. text: Hannah Schmitt)
