United Nations campus City building a new stop

BONN · The UN campus will get a new public transportation stop up and operating in December if all goes according to schedule. A “Bike + Ride” area is also planned and all bike stands will be covered with a roof.

The city of Bonn is planning to spend around 650,000 euro on infrastructure improvements in connection with a new public transportation stop at the UN campus. Deutsch Bahn (German Rail) wants to bring the new stop into operation in December. Due to the narrow conditions, the pedestrian walkway and bike paths will need to be widened by about five meters all the way to Kessenich, according to the city press office. A different surface is expected to make the path more visible.

On both sides of the new stop, there will be a “Bike + Ride” covered with a roof. It should offer a place for more than 100 bikes, including bike rentals. All bike stands will be covered.

At the crossroad of Walter-Flex-Straße and Joseph-Beuys-Allee, the pedestrian crosswalk will be newly made. A walkway is also planned on Joseph-Beuys-Allee where it meets Emil-Nolde-Straße to enable a connection to the long distance bus stop.

The bus stop at Walter-Flex-Straße is expected to offer barrier free accessibility for passengers waiting for buses in both directions. At the moment, the existing bus stop is used by Line 630. In the future, Lines 610 and 611 will also run to offer a direct connection to the UN campus. In the section of road before the stop on Joseph-Beuys-Allee and in Walter-Flex-Straße, there will be waiting places for taxis, a handicapped parking space and parking spaces for delivery and pick-up. The rest of the parking spaces there will be regulated by use of “Parkscheiben,” the parking discs displayed in car windows. This will help alleviate long term parking.
