Break-ins Burglars strike in Mehlem

Mehlem · There were several break-ins in Mehlem over the weekend. The police say observant neighbours are the best prevention against burglary.

Burglars struck several times last weekend in Mehlem. According to a police report, witnesses saw an unknown man on the balcony of the second floor of an apartment building in Rüdigerstraße at around 7pm on Friday. After failing to lever open a window, he climbed down over the balcony below and into the garden before running off towards the Rhine. The man is described as “young,” between 1.75 and 1.80 metres tall, slim and with short, dark hair. Burglars were also underway in Rüdigerstraße between 9am on Friday and 8am on Sunday. Marks were found on the window and balcony door of a house but the burglar failed to gain entry.

On Sunday at 12.50pm, neighbours noticed the window of an upper floor flat on Bachemer Straße was open. The police assume the perpetrator gained access to the window through the rear sunroom. Burglars were also in Bachemer Straße on Saturday between 5pm and 9.30pm. They gained access to a house by smashing the glass in a door to the terrace from the garden. The criminal police are investigating all the cases and possible witnesses are asked to call 0228 150.

Police said observant neighbours were the best prevention against burglary. People should question strangers in a house or in a neighbouring garden and note down suspicious number plates. Anyone seeing anything suspicious should call the police on 110. Windows and doors should be locked. Police keep residents informed of burglaries in their “radar” of break-ins from the previous week released each Wednesday at www.polizei.nrw.de (Original text: jab. Translated by Kate Carey.)
