“Earth Hour” Bonn turns out the lights for an hour

Bonn · As Bonn will play host this year to the UN World Climate Conference, the mayor of Bonn is hoping for especially high participation in Earth Hour this coming Saturday. For one hour on Saturday evening, lights will be turned off to send a signal of support for climate protection.

For the eleventh year, environmental foundation World Wide Fund (WWF) is calling for participation in the initiative “Earth Hour” which will take place this Saturday. The event is meant to send out a message of support for climate protection and call attention to wasting of natural resources. Many buildings in Bonn will turn out their lights on Saturday evening for one hour beginning at 8:30 pm.

Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan has asked for businesses and private persons to take part in the initiative: “I hope that in this year, when Bonn is hosting the 23rd World Climate Conference of the United Nations, that especially many Bonn residents will take part in Earth Hour. With just a simple click of the switch, we can send a clear signal that we stand for climate protection and sustainability.” There are many people working in Bonn who are very engaged in these topics, both in the UN institutions and in many other international organizations, as well as in the city administration.

From 8:30 until 9:30 pm on Saturday, the city administration building, the old town hall, district town halls, the opera and Bad Godesberg Chamber Theater will stay dark. The city public works will turn off spotlights on the Beethoven Haus, Poppelsdorf Palace, the Münster Cathedral, Koblenzer Tor, the Godesburg, and some churches. The Post Tower will remain dark as will buildings from Telekom, UN institutions on the UN campus, including at Lange Eugen.
