Rose Monday parade Bonn looks forward to longest parade yet

Bonn · Carnival comes to a peak this weekend in Bonn with the storming of city hall on Sunday and the big parade on Rose Monday. Being celebrated this year are the 190th anniversary of the parade and the 200th anniversary of the University of Bonn.

Bonn carnival is moving full steam ahead with highlights coming up over the long carnival weekend. On Sunday, the Bonn carnival royalty will take the town hall by storm, overthrowing Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan - all in good fun of course and probably just for the day. Then on Monday, the longest Rose Monday Parade ever in the history of Bonn, will pull through Bonn city center, beginning at 12pm.

In front of the town hall tower on Sunday, the honor guard and the city soldiers will open their camp on Marktplatz at 10:30 am. They have a few surprises up their sleeves for the takeover of city hall but more than that they would not reveal. In any case, carnival-goers can look forward to a colorful spectacle and perhaps some prominent guests.

"This year we can look back on a proud tradition in Bonn, in which we are happy to play a part. There has always been a sense of enjoyment and demonstration of community for all generations," said the president of the festival committee, Marlies Stockhorst. On its way from Rabinstraße to Dorotheenstraße in the old town, the parade runs four kilometers and parade director Axel Wolf promises a lot of music.

The first Rose Monday parade rolled through Bonn on February 18 of 1828 and this will be remembered in the 190th anniversary parade this year. 35 former carnival royalty from 1973 to 2017 will be on hand to recall the past, and the future will be projected with 125 boys and girls from the Beethoven School and their special choir. Also celebrating a major anniversary is the University of Bonn with its 200th year in existence. It will be a part of the parade as well, with Rector Michael Hoch and guests from partner universities.

Nearly 5,200 participants will be on floats or foot or on one of the 93 vehicles in the parade. The largest group is again the Circus Comicus from Bad Honnef with nearly 250 clowns. There will also be commentators along the route and for the first time, the festival committee is setting up a small grandstand at Münsterplatz. Special accommodations are being made for the physically impaired, and those in wheelchairs can view the parade from the grandstand at the corner of Marktplatz/ Remigiusgasse.

The Rose Monday Parade will be streamed live from 11:11am at: www.kamelle.de
