“Bonn shines” 2016 Bonn lights will shine brightly this weekend

BONN · Organizers are hoping for lots of visitors this weekend when lights in the Bonn inner city will be shining brightly. Extended shopping hours and illuminated attractions await those who venture in after dark.

Maybe it’s the beginning of the the season when darkness creeps in early on the cool autumn evenings, but this weekend Bonn will be a warm show of lights. On Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5, the light show will go on until 10 p.m. There will also be Sunday shopping hours from 1- 6 p.m. (yes, Sunday shopping!) and lights will shine throughout the city. The weekend event is called “Bonn leuchtet” (Bonn shines or Bonn is lit up) and the motto of the evening is “Im neuen Lichte” (In a New Light), brought to you by City-Marketing.

Businesses will showcase their storefront windows with spotlights and many attractions will be illuminated. At the Sparkasse Bank on Friedensplatz, there will be a special light show. The bank is one of the main sponsors of the evening; it will use video projection and light up objects in the streets and squares.

Preparations for the event are in full swing. “We are talking to everyone who has lots of space and light in their buildings,” says Maike Reinhardt of City-Marketing. Variety will also be a part of the evening with the Beethoven Haus offering flashlight tours with actors from “Carnevale di Venezia” leading the way in their splendid costumes. The tourist train “City-Light-Express” invites passengers young and old to hop on board.

The Deutsche Museum and the Cologne Odysseum will start off on the Marktplatz with a “Wissensolympiade” (Knowledge Olympics) - with light experiments. Beginning on Friday, Münsterplatz will offer an array of international culinary specialties at the "Euromarché."

Organizers hope that “Bonn leuchtet” will be similarly successful to Bonn-Fest which brought just under 300,000 visitors. City-Marketing has big plans for the event in the coming years. “We would like to light up the complete inner city with illumination artists in the next few years,” says Reinhardt. “Our vision is that the marketing teams in Beuel and Bad Godesberg will join in,” added Karina Kröber of City-Marketing.
