Demolition on Bundeskanzlerplatz Bonn-Center to be demolished in March

BONN · Project developers told residents on Saturday that the Bonn-Center would be demolished by explosives on 19 March. It is the first such demolition in Bonn for 14 years.

Project developer and owner Art-Invest Real Estate from Cologne and demolition company AWR Abbruch announced 19 March as the planned date for the demolition by explosives of the Bonn-Center high-rise at an information session for residents on Saturday. It had long been unclear whether the building would be demolished by explosives or removed piece by piece.

“We examined a step-by-step partial demolition as well as demolition by explosives for cost, time, dust and noise impact,” explained project leader Thomas Leise from Art-Invest. “In the end the fact that demolition by explosives impacted residents less tipped the balance for the decision.” Art-Invest said the demolition would take place on Sunday, 19 March. Before then a comprehensive safety plan will be drawn up. Residents who were not present on Saturday will be informed of the further actions by letter. Art-Invest said it still had to finalise agreements with Bonn city and Deutsche Bahn before timing could be confirmed.

At the moment removal works in the high-rise are being carried out on the site at Bundeskanzlerplatz. The flat-roofed building has already been completely demolished and removed. Space will be made for a modern urban quarter on the site of the old Bonn-Center, which should be ready by 2020. The starting date for the new construction is planned for the beginning of 2018. The town planning design by JSWD architects for the new quarter at the Bundeskanzlerplatz comprises around 70,000 square metres of floor space. There will be three buildings and a high-rise of between 60 and 101.5 metres.

The last big demolition by explosives in Bonn was 14 years ago when the Konrad-Adenauer House, which served as the national headquarters of the CDU from 1972 to 2000 and was situated in the Parliament and government quarter on the east side of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee in Gronau, was demolished. That demolition also took place on a Sunday, on 14 December 2003.
