The 26-year-old Dutch man, who lived in Bonn-Beuel with his girlfriend and Olympic athlete Birgit Overzier, was on the way to Mülheim to attend the training in the Badminton basecamp, which he never arrived at. „We are all in shock and learned with horror of his death“, said National League Manager Maximilian Schneider.

Erik Meijs was one of the two severely injured drivers in the accident. He was cut from the car wreck and flown to a clinic in Duisburger where he later died.
