Bonn central station All wrapped up

Bonn · It is indeed a strange sight for those heading to the Bonn central train station, and it has more to do with cleaning than art.

In summer of 1995, the artist couple Jean-Claude and Christo wrapped up the German Reichstag in a silvery fabric, creating an imposing work of art in a gigantic dimension. Tourists came from all around the world to see “The Wrapped Reichstag” in Berlin. Ok, so the Bonn Hauptbahnhof (Central train station) doesn’t look nearly as beautiful or artistic as Christo’s piece of work, but the plastic foil still gives it an interesting appearance. Or it may seem a bit strange depending on how you look at it.

The reason for the Bahnhof under wrap is a deep cleaning of the facade. It’s been around since 1883/1884 and the historical building needs some work. A spokesperson from Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) says the work should be completed in mid-August. After that, the train station should look all shiny and clean, at least from the outside. Cleaning costs will run around 60,000 euros and when it’s all finished, the bricks should take on a brighter yellow color. The facade was last cleaned in the 1980’s. (Original text: Lisa Inhoffen)
