Wine country in the Ahr A little adventure and lots to do

Ahrtal · It’s a gorgeous part of Germany and only a stone’s throw from Bonn. The Ahr valley offers beautiful scenery, a little bit of adventure and even something to do when bad weather hits.

The older couple climbs slowly and carefully up the last meters of the rocks to the “Teufelsloch” (Devil’s Hole). It’s only a short walk but it requires concentration and solid shoes. Even though the hike around the “Ahrschleife” (Ahr loop) is not exactly mountain climbing, it requires good physical condition in some parts and a little sense of adventure - as shown in the climb from Altenahr up to this striking rock formation.

But in the Ahrtal (Ahr valley), there is more to do than just hiking. There are many wineries which are worth a visit, and the “Rotweinstraße” (Red Wine Road) curves between the vineyards from town to town.

Getting there: Ahr valley is reachable by car or train. From Bonn on the A565 autobahn, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the Ahr. By train, visitors can get out at the stops: Altenahr, Rech and Dernau to name a few.

For children: A popular family destination in Altenahr is the summer toboggan run. Seated in the toboggan carts, riders are towed up 200 meters and ride down again through fast curves on the track back to the valley. A ride costs 2.20 euros on weekdays and from 3 euros on the weekend. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult, and they ride free. Snacks and drinks are also available and there are pony rides on the weekend.
