“MagicCon” A celebration for Fantasy fans

Bonn · Visitors to “MagicCon” in the Maritim Hotel invest lots of money in their passion for the fantasy world. Costumes are creative and self-designed and people come from even far away.

Organizers were expecting up to 5,000 visitors on Friday for the first MagicCon in the Maritim Hotel. The Fantasy Convention in Bonn draws people from all over, Elodie and Susan being two good examples. Elodie comes from France and Susan is from England. They have been at previous conventions as well, but this weekend they are dressed up for the first time as Fili and Kili from The Hobbit film.

They had been working on their costumes for months to “represent the characters we love.” The name is new but the concept is tried and true. FedCon GmbH put together RingCon and HobbitCon to make it MagicCon. Spokesperson Kathleen Mrosk said the reactions had been mixed. “The Lord of the Ring fans were sad.” But this has not put a damper on the level of interest in the convention.

Yesterday morning in the hotel foyer were long lines of people, picking up tickets they had ordered in advance. Elves, dwarves, orks, Harry Potter, Doctor Who costumes and other creative garb could be spotted. Everyone was keen to see films, stars from their favorite series, visit workshops and meet up with friends.

A visit to the convention can add up. 28-year-old Lena reports that by the time entrance fee, hotel, train travel, costume and extras have been paid for, it can quickly come to around 1,000 euros. Even Merlin who lives in Bad Honnef and doesn’t have to pay for a hotel said he will spend easily 900 euros.
