Arrest at Cologne/Bonn airport 60-year-old with gun in his suitcase

Köln/Bonn · During a routine bag check last Thursday at Cologne/Bonn Airport, security workers found a gun with ammunition in a suitcase. Police took the 60-year-old owner of the bag into custody.

The man was arrested early Thursday morning at around 2:30 am at the Cologne/Bonn Airport. Martin Pauly, spokesperson for the Federal Police Directorate in Sankt Augustin, gave out the information upon request. The 60-year-old man was with his family on their way to Gaziantep in Turkey. His place of residence was given as the Netherlands, and he was also a Turkish citizen.

As security personnel were scanning the hand luggage, they noticed the outline of a weapon in the suitcase of the 60-year-old. Further investigation confirmed the suspicion and federal police were immediately summoned. The police took the man into custody in the security area and secured the weapon and ammunition. How the man got the weapon and what his intentions were remains unclear. An arrest warrant was filed against him for violation of the law on weapons and he sits in a Cologne detention center.

Meanwhile, the criminal investigation department and the Cologne public prosecutor's office are looking into the case, explained Pauly. Investigations were difficult because the arrested man resides in the Netherlands. Officials did not want to comment further while the investigation was ongoing.
